Copper Country Republicans turned out yesterday to welcome the oldest son of President Donald Trump to the Copper Country. Donald Trump Jr. made a brief campaign stop at the Houghton County Memorial Airport. He hit on all of the campaign’s usual talking points, including unverified accusations that Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s family received a payoff from a Russian businesswoman, bias by traditional and social media, defense of the Second Amendment, and opposition to abortion.
He touted the Trump administration’s accomplishments, including two Middle East peace accords, and the national economy.
No mention was made of the COVID-19 pandemic, even as the national death toll passed 1,100 per day. Social distancing was nonexistent, and masks were infrequent.
A small group of protestors gathered near the airport entrance.
Trump was introduced by Republican First District U.S. Representative Jack Bergman. Democratic congressional candidate Dana Ferguson issued a statement following the rally, saying the “rhetoric and tone of this event was extraordinarily disappointing, and potentially dangerous.”
