A mechanical malfunction led to a dramatic pickup truck fire on Quincy Hill this afternoon.
A Hancock police officer at the scene said that the strap holding the truck’s gas tank apparently failed while it was headed north on US-41.
The driver was able to guide the vehicle off the highway into the parking lot of the scenic overlook south of the Quincy Mine, then escape the truck without injury.
After allowing the fuel to burn off, Quincy-Franklin-Hancock Township firefighters moved in to end the blaze.
The truck was destroyed, and smoke from the blaze could be seen from several miles away.
