The Portage Lake District Library invites the public to learn about plans for improved public transportation in the Keweenaw and Western Upper Peninsula on Thursday, October 6, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
“Getting Around: Transportation Challenges and Opportunities in the Keweenaw and Western U.P.” is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country in cooperation with the Western U.P. Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR), the Michigan Department of Transportation, and the cities of Houghton and Hancock.
Their presentation will outline the recent Michigan Regional Transit Mobility Initiative and Region 1 Coordinated Mobility Plan and explain how they relate to the Regional Prosperity Initiative and to Governor Snyder’s Special Message to the Legislature on the topic of aging, “Making Michigan a Great Place to Live Well and Age Well.” The presentation will also include examples from transit providers in Ontonagon, Gogebic, and Iron counties.
Better coordinated transportation options are a goal to improve access to education, employment, health care, mental health care, government, and food and shopping centers, especially for low-income and elderly residents. Participants will learn about recent studies and plans to meet the needs and challenges for public transportation in Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga counties.
A panel discussion with local providers and stakeholders will follow the presentation.
