Townhomes May Be Built On Site Of Former Houghton High School

The city of Houghton is helping to clear a roadblock for a buyer to purchase part of the property where the old high school used to stand.

The city council agreed to remove a deed restriction on five southern lots on Houghton Avenue that the county is looking to sell.

The lots were zoned as business in the late 1990’s, with a restriction prohibiting single family and multi-family housing.

City Manager Eric Waara said the site could be used to build townhomes with parking in the back.

In 2015, the county had requested a release of deed restrictions for the front five lots when they were sold at that time.
