A town hall focusing on redistricting reform will be held in Pelkie this week.
The event is being organized by Voters Not Politicians to discuss Proposal 2, an amendment to the Michigan State Constitution to reform the process for redrawing congressional and state legislative district boundaries through an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.
The proposal will appear on the November 6th ballot.
Voters Not Politicians is described as a non-partisan ballot committee to end so-called gerrymandering, the manipulation of voting maps for political gain.
The town hall will take place at Mission United Lutheran Church on Wednesday at 6pm.
Here is the full press release from Voters Not Politicians:
WHAT: Town hall discussions on the problems caused by gerrymandering and a proposed solution for Michigan voters to appear on the November 6 ballot.
WHEN: Wednesday, September 12 at 6:00pm–7:00pm
WHERE: Mission United Lutheran Church | 16463 PELKIE Rd, Pelkie, Michigan 49958
WHY: To inform voters about Proposal 2, an amendment to the Michigan State Constitution to reform the process for redrawing congressional and state legislative district boundaries through an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.
DETAILS: Currently, politicians and lobbyists draw our voting maps behind closed doors. Voters Not Politicians is working to amend the state Constitution to establish an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission that would empower voters to draw district lines through a series of open meetings. Proposal 2 has been certified for the November ballot in order to safeguard the rights of all citizens to have a voice and input in their democracy.
Using all volunteer petition circulators, the organization collected more than 425,000 signatures in 110 days to place the proposal on the November 2018 state ballot, well in excess of the 315,654 minimum required by law. Ending partisan gerrymandering is an important first step in solving our state’s most important issues, like education, roads and safe water.
