The tourism industry in the wintertime depends on cold temperatures and a lot of snow, but these last couple of days may have been a case of too much of a good thing.
Many snowmobilers, skiers and snow boarders are in town to enjoy the winter recreation but frigid temperatures and dangerously low wind chills have forced many off the trails and the slopes.
President of the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau Dianne St. Amour said it won’t be long before people are back outside. “Well, we absolutely have enough snow. Unfortunately, with the wind chills, it makes things a little dangerous, so my suggestion would be to hunker down, at least for today. Wind chills are supposed to die down tomorrow,” she said.
Tourists are encouraged to enjoy some of the shops and other indoor attractions for the next day or so. The most important thing is that people stay safe.
St. Amour said, “Stay indoors, stay warm, because after being out in the wind chills for four to five minutes, the frostbite sets in and you can need medical attention and we want you to be able to come back time and time again.”
