Throngs Turn Out for Free COVID Tests

Lots of Copper Country residents turned out Saturday for free COVID-19 tests.

Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Health Officer Kate Beer said they were nearly overwhelmed… [BEER B].

“We had scheduled about 500 tests today, and I believe we’re going to hit the 600 mark rather easily.”

In fact, with extra kits pulled in from the Health Department and Upper Great Lakes Family Health, 657 tests were performed.

More than 50 volunteers helped make the testing day happen, ranging from Michigan National Guard soldiers to local health professionals, to Houghton County Commissioner Tom Tikkanen…

“Let’s face it – we’re up against something serious here. We can beat this, but people need to pull together, and adopt some safe practices.”

Tikkanen gave credit to the Health Department…

“I’m very proud of our Health Department. Three of our commissioners sit on that board, so we are very aware of the efforts going on.”

Beer said she isn’t sure if another such opportunity will be provided…

“T takes a lot of effort to pull these off. We’ll see what today’s results bring, and the testing capacity in the remaining weeks here in our local area.”

Both Tikkanen and Beer agreed – for a long-term effort to be successful, politics has to come out of it.
