Three Officers Honored for Bravery at Baraga County Board Meeting

Three law enforcement officers were honored last evening for their courageous efforts to prevent a tragedy.

L-R – Sheriff Joe Brogan, Deputy Jamas Gustafson, Deputy Durwyn Chaudier, Trooper Josh Barnett, Calumet State Police Post Commander First Lieutenant Jason Wickstrom, Baraga County Undersheriff David Miller.

At the Baraga County Commission meeting, Sheriff Joe Brogan presented Certificates of Excellence to Deputies Jamas Gustafson and Durwyn Chaudier, and State Police Trooper Josh Barnett.

He explained that the three officers were called out to the edge of a high cliff in L’Anse Township on April 26th…

On that high cliff was a young girl who, for whatever reason, was contemplating suicide by leaping from that cliff onto the jagged rocks below. A fall from that cliff would certainly result in serious injury or death.

The officers talked to the girl, and were eventually able to work their way close enough to grab her, and pull her to safety.

Brogan said he was not surprised afterward when the officers modestly downplayed their roles, each making sure to share credit with the others…

Our county is blessed to have young men of this caliber serving its citizens. I am extremely proud of each of them.

In other action at last night’s meeting, Brogan informed commissioners that Payne and Dolan should be available to repave the Sheriff’s Department parking lot late this month. Commissioners appointed Rodney Loonsfoot and Joseph Eckerberg to represent the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community on the Veterans Affairs Committee. They also approved a contract with Tri-County Public Defenders to represent indigent criminal defendants, with the same terms as last year’s agreement.
