Three area teens are among the 120 finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Awards for the 2022-23 school year.
Thirty-two $2,000 scholarships will be presented by the MHSAA and Farm Bureau Insurance.
Finalists from our area include Claire Filpus from Houghton High School, Makennah Uotila from Ontonagon High School, and Amos Norland from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City High School.
Students are nominated by their schools, and must have earned at least one varsity letter in at least one sport in which the MHSAA holds a post-season tournament. Most of this year’s nominees participate in at least two sports. Students must have a grade point average of 3.50 or better.
Students also were asked to respond to a series of short essay questions, submit two letters of recommendation and a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.
The applications were judged by a 65-member committee of school coaches, counselors, faculty members, administrators and board members from MHSAA member schools. Selection and announcement of the 32 scholarship recipients will take place in early February.
