A teenager from Baltic was seriously injured following an accident in Portage Township Tuesday.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department said the accident happened around 2:30pm on Superior Road at the intersection of Elsie Road.
Authorities say 17-year-old Trent Nordstrom failed to properly yield at the posted intersection while driving in a 1993 Chevy truck.
A Bacco Construction dump truck towing a pup trailer was traveling southbound on Superior Road, driven by 57-year-old Tom St. Pierre of Manistique.
The dump truck was unable to avoid striking Nordstrom as the Chevy truck pulled out in front of him.
The dump truck pushed the pickup truck into the northbound ditch and snow bank which caused serious damage to the pickup truck driver’s side.
Nordstrom was trapped in the truck and had to be extricated by the Hurontown Fire Department with the Jaws of Life.
He was treated at the scene by Adams Township First Responders then taken to UP Health System Portage by Mercy Ambulance.
Neither alcohol nor speed are considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Houghton City Police Department, Michigan State Police, Adams Township First Responders, Mercy Ambulance, Hurontown Fire Department, and Superior Service Towing.
