Sturgeon Planted in Ontonagon River

The Lake Superior sturgeon population has received a boost.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently released 1,499 juvenile lake sturgeon into the Ontonagon River.

They’re part of an effort to repopulate the ancient fish, which is on Michigan’s threatened species list. The Ontonagon River release was the only one affecting Lake Superior.

An additional 18,000 juveniles were released into tributaries of Lakes Michigan and Huron, along with a couple of inland lakes in the Northern Lower Peninsula.

Lake sturgeon eggs and larvae were collected from the wild in April and May and then reared in streamside facilities until they were large enough to tag and released.
