The following press release was issued by Michigan Tech writer Mark Wilcox:
High school students from throughout the country will travel throughout the Upper Peninsula during the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI), July 14-27. Part of Michigan Technological University’s Summer Youth Programs (SYP), explorations will take the students beyond the Houghton campus as they explore transportation industries in Marquette, St. Ignace and Sault Ste. The NSTI is a competitive scholarship program. Accepted students received a full scholarship valued at approximately $2,000 to cover the cost of room, board and tuition for the two-week program. In addition to an in-depth look at transportation industries, the students will get a taste of college life by living in residence halls, eating in cafeterias and participating in recreational activities on the Michigan Tech Campus.
Classroom explorations will focus on bridge design and construction, airport design, public transit, railroads and more.
Field activities include visits to the Soo Locks and International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, the Mackinac Bridge in St. Ignace, Sawyer International Airport and the railyards in Marquette County.
Of course the students will embark on several field trips in the Keweenaw. On Monday, July 14, the students will visit the Eagle River Wooden and Steel Truss Bridge and the historic Calumet rail infrastructure. They will tour the Portage Lake Lift Bridge from 9:30 to 11:30 on Wednesday, July 17.
