Stories & Poems Sought For Red Jacket Jamboree Christmas Show

Do you have a favorite memory of Christmas spent in the Keweenaw? Or perhaps a story about a holiday that didn’t go how you planned?

Real People Media and Main Street Calumet is inviting storytellers of all ages to come share their best story for The Red Jacket Jamboree, an old-time radio variety show.

Stories need not be true but they should be family friendly and be able to be told in under 5 minutes. Storytellers may have assistance with sound affects from the Red Jacket Jamboree actors as well as musical accompaniment.

The Red Jacket Jamboree is also accepting poetry submissions for the December show. The crew is interested in poetry which reflects the season. i.e. winter, holidays, skiing, curling, etc.

Interested poets/storytellers should send an email asap to realpeoplemedia@gmail.com to set up a meeting with the Red Jacket Jamboree crew.

Participants must be available on the afternoon of Thursday, December 21 and all day on December 22. The program will be recorded for radio broadcast at a later date.

The Red Jacket Jamboree, an old-time radio variety show, showcases stories, songs and sketches about the Keweenaw Peninsula. The show is an collaboration between Main Street Calumet and Real People Media, a nonprofit organization which helps people share their stories through the literary, visual, performing and media arts. The December show features 2 one-hour performances. The first performance will celebrate winter in the Keweenaw and the second performance will be our Christmas show.

The show features performances by The Red Jacket Band with Bill Carrothers on piano, Jerry Younce on guitar and Bob Hiltunen on percussion/guitar, Red Jacket Actors, host Lena Dorey and featured singer-songwriter Jetty Rae.

The Red Jacket Jamboree Holiday show will be Friday, December 22 at 7:00pm. The audience is asked to be in their seats 5 minutes prior to the show. The Jamboree is held at the historic Calumet Theatre in Calumet.

The Red Jacket Jamboree is made possible with support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and private donations.
