The State of Michigan will help a local developer restore a vacant building in downtown Houghton.
The Michigan Strategic Fund will provide a $350,709 Michigan Community Revitalization Program performance-based grant to help breathe life into the two-story structure at 111 Shelden Avenue. That’s the smaller of the two buildings at the very west edge of downtown Houghton – next to the former Kirkish Furniture building.
The local developer, Sisu Ventures, LLC, plans to establish two residential units on the top floor, and renovate the lower level for retail space. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $943,005.
In the release from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation accompanying the announcement yesterday, Sisu Ventures co-owner Brendan Jacques said they look forward to bringing “high quality residential housing and increased retail activity to an already vibrant block of Shelden Avenue.”
Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said the city will contribute $28,500 in improvements around the building, including better access to the adjacent parking deck, and an upgraded water line.
