State Cash Will Help Preserve Calumet’s Schindler Building

The state will provide $100,000 to help restore an historic building in downtown Calumet.

The award from the Historic Preservation Office’s Resilient Lakeshore Heritage Grant Program will support stabilization of the historic sandstone building at 425 5th Street, known as the Schindler Building.

The building has been the focus of the Bring Back Calumet initiative and various project partners for several years. It was built in 1882, and is part of the Calumet Historic District.

The grant goes to the Houghton County Land Bank, which currently owns the structure.

Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance Executive Director Jeff Ratcliffe called the funding “crucial to ongoing efforts to preserve the fabric of downtown Calumet.”
