US Senator Debbie Stabenow will give the commencement address to graduates at Northern Michigan University during next month’s ceremony.
Northern Today, the NMU news source, reports that the senator accepted the invitation by the university to be the keynote speaker on Saturday, May 4th.
NMU President Fritz Erickson said Senator Stabenow has been a key supporter of the university’s efforts to secure wireless spectrum and expand its Educational Access Network across the Upper Peninsula.
Erickson said Stabenow is also committed to workforce development and filling the critical need for skilled employees.
Senator Stabenow is also leading federal efforts to protect the Great Lakes.
She served 12 years in the Michigan House of Representatives and four years in the State Senate before being elected to represent Michigan’s Eighth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. She made history in 2000 when she became the first woman from Michigan elected to the United States Senate.
