This Wednesday, participants will be awarded certificates of achievement for their participation in a ten-week fitness and nutrition course taught by CrossFit Hakkepeliitta coaches.
Participants from Baraga and Houghton Counties learned how to increase their physical activity and increase their intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, as well as low and no-fat dairy.
Classes were taught by CrossFit coaches under the direction of Micah Stipech, owner of CrossFit Hakkepeliitta. Coaches have backgrounds in education and fitness.
Copper Country Mental Health Services (CCMHS) is one of two organizations in Michigan piloting a modified 10-week version of the evidence-based curriculum, Health Matters, designed for persons with developmental disability. Training and Prevention Coordinator Brian Rendel says, “persons with developmental disabilities tend to be at higher risk of health conditions that can be improved by proper diet and increased physical activity. I am delighted that Micah Stipech and his CrossFit Hakkepeliitta team are helping us pilot the course. It is exciting to watch Micah and his coaches motivate our participants to learn ways to improve their health.”
Copper Country Mental Health and CrossFit Hakkepeliitta will continue piloting the 10-week program with a new group of participants from Houghton, Baraga, and Ontonagon Counties starting next week.
The experience piloting the curriculum with these two groups along with a pilot program in Lower Michigan will assist the Michigan Nutrition Network in finalizing a version of the curriculum that may be used in the future around the state.
