Southern Keweenaw Trail Improvements Thanks to Gundlach Fund Grant from KCF

Southern Keweenaw Trails (SoKe) received a grant in 2016 for $3000 from the Herman Gundlach Endowment Fund at Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF). The group has put those funds to good use with the purchase of a trailhead map, trail intersection maps, picnic tables and grills for the trailhead recreation area and also some trail maintenance supplies.

Chris Iskra, the group’s treasurer, says “The new signage will make it easier for riders and hikers to know where to begin and where the trails go. And we hope people will now stay at the site and enjoy this space after their ride. We’ve got grills and picnic tables so the whole trail system is much more family friendly.”

This Memorial Day Weekend, SoKe hosts the first big event of Bike the Keweenaw, one part of the larger recreational event Experience the Keweenaw (full event schedule can be found at experiencethekeweenaw.com/events). The community is encouraged to get out and enjoy all the recreational opportunities the Keweenaw has to offer.

If you would like to contribute to funds that provide for recreational opportunities on the Keweenaw, please visit KCF’s website at keweenawgives.org where you can find many funds devoted to recreational and environmental concerns in Houghton and Keweenaw counties.

Through philanthropic services, strategic investments and community leadership, Keweenaw Community Foundation helps people support the causes they care about, now and for generations to come.
