Soft Ice Prompts Safety Warnings

The unusually warm weather has prompted the Houghton County Sheriff’s office to advise snowmobile riders to stay off the Portage.

Ice conditions are variable, and can be especially dangerous in areas affected by currents – notably near the Houghton-Hancock Bridge.

Officials strongly recommend that the designated snowmobile trail across the bridge be used to cross the canal.

The U.S. Coast Guard is echoing the soft ice concern. At Coast Guard Station Marquette, Petty Officer 2nd Class Terry Bailey says you don’t have much time if you fall through the ice…

The Coast Guard advises anyone who plans to go out on to the ice to let people know where they’ll be, and take a device that would allow you to call for help.
