The damages caused by the Father’s Day flood are expected to top $100 million.
Governor Rick Snyder declared Houghton County a disaster area earlier this week and he was here on Tuesday to see the damages for himself.
“We did a helicopter tour around the area to look at the damage and there’s some serious damage. I appreciate how everyone’s rallied, though, to help and we have more resources on the way,” Snyder said.
The Michigan National Guard will begin working with local crews Wednesday to rebuild the roads and bridges washed out by the storm.
Snyder says more help from the state is on its way. “We’re already trying to do damage assessments, trying to talk to business owners, families, seeing what damage has been done. MDOT has been doing a lot of work with the highways and hopefully helping beyond just the state highways. And I appreciate the great road commission work that’s going on by all the departments of public works from the local governments.”
Lansing is also working with local governments to help qualify for FEMA funding from the federal government.
Critical to getting that funding is residents calling 211 to set up a quick home assessment. These assessments are not for home owner’s insurance claims, but to verify that a home was damaged in the flood.
