Snowmobile safety and enforcement patrols will be increased on Upper Peninsula trails this weekend.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday typically brings an increase in trail use by vacationers taking advantage of the three-day weekend.
Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers will be joined by local, state and federal officers for expanded group patrols.
Last year, five snowmobile fatalities occurred in Michigan on the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Four of those deaths occurred in the Upper Peninsula.
The U.P. has experienced four deaths on the trails this winter. The most recent occurred Wednesday night near Sault Ste. Marie.
