Snow Removal Comes With Hefty Pricetag

Just how much snow has piled on Houghton County this year?

County Highway Engineer Kevin Harju says Painesdale has tallied 275 inches as of the end of last month with Calumet buried under more than 300 inches of snow.

Clearing the roads of all that powder isn’t cheap.

Harju said the county is currently $200,000 over last year’s budget with around $2 million in costs for snow removal.

The County Road Commission has consumed about 95,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

Harju said if it snow two inches or it snows a foot, the crews have to hit the roads.

As the midway point of April approaches, more snow is in the forecast for the weekend.
