COVID-19 cases rose slightly in the Copper Country last week.
Updated figures released yesterday by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services showed 122 new confirmed cases in Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Baraga Counties, 10 more than in the previous week.
Baraga County was responsible for the increase, with a 63 percent jump in diagnoses.
Michigan’s statewide total also continues to edge upward, with the daily average for the past week 19 percent higher than the previous week.
The relatively-lightly vaccinated counties of the western Upper Peninsula continue to have the highest infection rates in the state.
Officials caution that the number of confirmed cases is probably significantly lower than the actual infection rate. Positive tests from home tests are rarely reported. Cases with few or no symptoms may go undiagnosed, although people with mild infections can still spread the virus to others.
