The Houghton Police Department is investigating a 6-vehicle accident that happened on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge around 4:30pm on Monday.
The bridge had vehicle traffic stopped so a ship could pass through. The bridge then reopened to vehicle traffic and the congested traffic stopped quickly on the south end of the bridge. A total of 6 vehicles were involved in multiple rear end accidents on the south end of the bridge.
There were no reports of injuries. Assisting at the scene were the Hancock Police Department and the Michigan State Police.
The Houghton Police Department would like to remind drivers to remember to not follow too closely to vehicles in front of them as this is one of the leading causes of accidents.
