Shower of Water and Energy Savings at MTU

Sometimes, it’s the small things that add up.

Tech Today reports that MTU Wadsworth Residence Hall building mechanic James Hanner noticed last summer that some of the shower heads in the building passed through a lot of water. Some of the ones he tested delivered eight gallons a minute.

Hanner and Tech Director of Energy management Larry Hermanson arranged to swap the old shower heads out for new ones that deliver just two gallons per minute.

There are 200 showers in Wads. It cost $6,000 to make the switch in August.

Since then, the university has saved more than $11,000 on its water bill, along with some additional energy cost savings because less water is being heated.
