From the Copper Country Community Arts Center:
There are many reminders of the rich copper mining history still present on the landscape. The Copper Country Community Arts Center’s annual Shaft community exhibition called on artists to submit art inspired by this history, not just the visible elements, but the effects of the industry on the people and the land and how it shaped the Copper Country. This year 17 artists responded with 24 pieces; they include: Madhura Mehendale, Graydon Dagen, Cynthia Cote, Tammy Toj Gajewski, William Thompson, Ryan Wakeham, Lynn Mazzoleni, Jeanne Houle Peters, Kathryn Lund Johnson, Clyde Mikkola, Christina Rainey, Phyllis Fredendall, Kevin Breyfogle, Bob Dawson, Kristina Sundstrom, Donica Dravillas, and Pamela Hecht. Also in the exhibition is the newly acquired painting, “Locomotive” by John Haro. This award winning watercolor was donated to the CCCAC Permanent Collection by the family of John Haro. One student from Jeffers High School in Painesdale and twelve 4th graders from South Range Elementary School participated. All are students of Paige Lewendowski. The public is invited to vote for their favorite pieces throughout the exhibition. Voting is also taking place online. Visit our Facebook page at facebook.com/CCCAC and look for the 2022 Shaft Exhibition photo album. Votes will be tallied and the Community Choice Awards for Shaft winners will be announced in December. The 28th annual Shaft exhibition is on display in the Kerredge Gallery at the Copper Country Community Arts Center now through December 2nd. There will be a public reception on Friday, November 25th from 5:30 to 7:30. Refreshments will be served. CCCAC exhibitions and programs are supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 11-6pm and Saturday 10-2pm.
