Several Road Projects In Houghton Get Underway

Road Work, Houghton Razorback DriveA few more orange barrels will be popping up in Houghton over the next few weeks.

Starting Wednesday, crews will be at several locations working on the roads.

Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said, “They’re going to be doing a full crush and shape on several streets in town that have needed it for a while, so we got some really good prices this year and we’re going to do a bunch of paving work.”

Those roads include parts of Sharon Avenue around the SDC Football field as well as Razorback Drive and other well-traveled areas.

There will also be some much-needed work done on the parking deck.

Waara said, “And we’re going to take the old brick railings down partially, encapsulate them in concrete, tuck point whatever remaining brick there may be, and install a steel rail—similar to the rail was put there two years ago.”

The cost of the street project is $630,000 that the city funded through a USDA Rural Development bond, which allows them address so many different issues at the same time.

The parking deck work is funded by the city’s parking deck fund in the annual budget.

The major roadwork is expected to be completed in the next few weeks with the parking deck project wrapping up next month.
