Several Proposals On Today’s Ballot

There are ballot items galore that are being voted on today.

The largest of these may be the millage renewal for the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.

The six-year 2.55 mills will generate an estimated $2.17 million for 2016.

Without it, major cutbacks in terms of care and staffing are expected at the facility, which provides a safety net for vulnerable adults who may not have the means to pay for nursing home care.

Chassell residents will play a big role in the future of the Portage Lake District Library as whether to pull out of the library is on the ballot.

A ‘Yes’ vote here means you agree that Chassell will end it’s partnership with the library, as well as the 2 mill tax levy that goes to support it.

Voting ‘No’ means you want to keep things the way they are.

The Portage Lake District Library receives roughly 20 percent of their funding from Chassell Township residents.

Other ballot items include the Houghton County Operating Millage, the Calumet Township Building and Maintenance Millage, and a bonding proposal for Lake Linden-Hubbell Public Schools for $2.7 million for equipment and security upgrades.
