Senate Leader Shirkey Apologizes for Obscene Slam

Republican State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey says he’s apologized to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for using a four letter word to describe her and other state Democratic leaders.

In a public session at Hillsdale College, Shirkey described the Democrats as being on the “bats**t crazy spectrum.”

The comments were reported yesterday by Hillsdale’s student newspaper, The Collegian. They were made earlier this week at a forum organized by Hillsdale College Republicans.

Hillsdale is known for its politically conservative philosophy. Still, a photo in The Collegian shows that fewer than 10 students attended Shirkey’s appearance.

A spokesperson for Whitmer called the comment “sexist.” Shirkey said it wasn’t sexist, because the group of Democrats he aimed the insult at also includes men.
