Authorities continue to look for three people who never returned from a fishing trip Saturday afternoon on Lake Superior.
Troopers with the Michigan State Police Calumet Post say 61-year-old Keith Karvonen of Atlantic Mine launched his boat from the Portage Entry near Chassell early Saturday afternoon. Two passengers were aboard.
When they didn’t return after dark, family members contacted authorities.
The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed that boat owner Karvonen is one those missing. The passengers are 43-year-old Steven Chartre of Ishpeming, and Chartre’s nine-year-old son, Ethan.
Since the search began, crews using helicopters and boats have covered more than 1,500 square miles from the town of Gay to the Keweenaw Bay, down to Baraga and even as far as the Huron Mountains.
Anyone with information regarding the missing boaters are asked to call the Coast Guard at (906) 635-3233, or the Michigan State Police Calumet Post at 337-5145..
