Sea Change Expeditions Visits Houghton

With the ice barely gone from the Portage Canal, the Keweenaw is welcoming its first special maritime visitor of the season.

The Sea Change Expeditions boat will be docked for several days near the Houghton Skate Park.

Captain Mark Gordon, his wife Katya, and volunteer student crew members sail Lake Superior to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Captain Mark says one of their focuses is the twin problems of climate change and invasive species, which are related…

The lower Great Lakes have, like, an aquatic invasive nightmare going on. They have over 180 different invasives.

Only about half of those species have reached Lake Superior, though, because they can’t handle the colder water. Global warming could change that…

As the lake warms, it will open the door to more and more invasives that will be able to survive, and come up from the lower Great Lakes.

You can hear my full interview with the Sea Change Expeditions crew on yesterday’s Copper Country Today program at KeweenawReport.com. You can also meet them in person at a program Monday (May 9th) at 6:30 at the Portage Lake District Library.
