School Bus Drivers Needed

Copper Country kids head back to school Tuesday, even as school districts struggle to fill critical jobs. Copper Country Intermediate School District Superintendent Jim Rautiola says that includes bus drivers…

Bus drivers are very difficult to find, with the CDL requirement, and the physicals that go with it, so if someone’s interested in driving bus, I don’t think you’re going to have too much of a difficult time finding a job.

Rautiola said there do seem to be enough drivers signed up to get the school year started…

We are still being able to fill positions, but I would say just about every local district has a position open.

If you would like to be a bus driver, contact the school district of your choice directly.

Copper Country kids will be among the last to return to the classrooms this fall. Some downstate districts started last week. Some U.P. districts, including those in Ontonagon County, began this week. Rautiola thinks the late start still works well for our districts…

I believe so, I mean, really, it’s up to the local districts what they do, but, you’re right, our friends on the western side of the U.P. started early.

Keweenaw Peninsula weather also influences the decision…

Oftentimes, our falls are nicer than our springs, so sometimes I think that weighs into the decision, too.

Local school districts coordinate on the significant milestones of the school calendar, such as start and end dates, and Christmas and spring vacations. Within those guidelines, they set their schedules independently.
