School Boards Honor Three Locals – CCISD Board Wrap

The Copper Country Association of School Boards has honored three area residents for their contributions to local K-12 education.

This year’s Student Leadership award went to Katie Jaszczak, a two-year Career and Technical Education student in the Health Careers and Certified Nursing Assistant program. Katie received a $500 scholarship from the National Youth Safety Essay Scholarship Contest.

The Outstanding Educational Employee Award was given to Copper Country Intermediate School District Special Education Supervisor Katrina Carlson. Carlson is responsible for 40 staff and 92 students, and oversees classrooms in four different locations.

The School Service Award went to the Hancock Police Department and Chief Wayne Butler. Hancock Police Officers have visited the CCISD Learning Center Programs, to build relationships with students, and teach that the police are community helpers.

The annual awards are usually presented at a spring banquet. Because that was canceled out of COVID-19 concerns, this year’s honors were handed out at this week’s CCISD board meeting.

At that meeting, Superintendent George Stockero told board members that he expects the state to have a return to school plan in place by July 1. The board hired Jennifer Harris as a Mental Health Professional, and Sarah Bodine as a Speech Language Pathologist. The district accepted the resignation of custodian Kevin Kalliainen, and the retirement of REMC1 System Engineer Mark Lucier.
