Sawaski Sentenced To One Year In Jail

A former Houghton High School coach and Athletic Director has been sentenced to one year in jail.

72-year-old Don Sawaski appeared in 97th District Court Friday after his case had been remanded from Houghton County Circuit Court at the end of October.

He had been facing two counts of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material, both 4 year felonies; and one count of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, a 7 year felony.

Those charges were dismissed in exchange for a plea of guilty to the misdemeanor charge of allowing a minor to access pornographic materials on his computer.

Sawaski had been arrested as a fugitive from justice in Colorado in January 2016.

His case was set to go to trial after numerous delays on October 30th.
