SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge Begins

Gentlemen…start you engines!

No, NASCAR hasn’t come to the Copper Country–but you won’t find anything closer to the feeling while on a snowmobile than the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge.

For the 14th year running, the Keweenaw Research Center at Michigan Tech is bringing talented student engineers to compete over spring break for the quietest, cleanest snowmobile.

The events, part of a sanctioned SAE International competition, range from an endurance run to emissions and noise tests to acceleration and handling courses.

Executive Director of the Keweenaw Research Center Jay Meldrum says they have a record number of teams participating this year.

The public has two opportunities to see the snowmobiles. There is an expo Wednesday at the Copper Country Mall and the acceleration and handling events this Saturday at the KRC by the airport are also open to the public.
