Rising To The SISU Challenge

Local athletes will put their SISU to the test this weekend with the SISU Challenge.

Event organizer Natalie McGrath with Michigan Tech’s Army ROTC said, “It is a 5K obstacle course that takes place down on the Houghton waterfront. It starts at the Chutes and Ladders and runs down to the Super 8 Motel, and along the way there are fourteen obstacles that include things like a warped wall, a rope bridge, a mud pit, tire slip and a cargo net—just to name a few of them.”

Money raised will go to support the Ben Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Ben Hall graduated from Michigan Tech in 2005 and commissioned straight into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, went to Ranger School and served in Italy before being deployed in Afghanistan where he was killed in action in 2009.

McGrath said, “He was a great cadet. I’ve talked to a lot of kids that he went to school with and they all have wonderful memories of him being a great mentor and a great person and this is just our way of memorializing him and thanking him for the ultimate sacrifice.”

Registration is still open for Saturday’s event. Participants can register as an individual or in teams of three to five people.

Last year, there were 16 teams competing in the event.

McGrath hopes the SISU Challenge will continue to grow and attract people from across the U.P.
