Residents Complain About Jet Skis At Hancock Beach

The waterways of the Keweenaw are meant to be enjoyed by everyone but problems can arise when motorized and non-motorized recreationists find themselves in close proximity.

The Hancock City Council heard complaints from a couple of residents at their regular meeting Wednesday about jet skis coming too close to kayaks and paddleboats on the Portage Canal, as well as swimmers at Hancock Beach.

A request was made to the council that a sign be installed on the new dock when completed warning jet skiers to stay away from the beach area.

The city was also asked to make it clear that the Keweenaw Water Trail is only for non-motorized use.

The Keweenaw Water Trail begins at McLain State Park and circles around the peninsula into Keweenaw Bay, Portage Lake and the Portage Lake Canal.

The water trail is meant to provide the paddler the opportunity to experience the grandeur of Lake Superior and the relatively calmness of Portage Lake.

Hancock City Manager Glenn Anderson said the waterway is patrolled by the Coast Guard and the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.
