The 15th Annual High School Local History Smackdown will take place at the historic Calumet Theatre, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2017. This event, originally scheduled for Thursday, April 27 was canceled due to ice and school closures but has been rescheduled for May 4.
Consider attending this free event and cheering on local high school students as they compete against each other to answer local history questions. The format, similar to a spelling bee, is a true test of their knowledge of all things history – including geography and geology—related to Keweenaw, Baraga, Ontonagon, and Houghton counties.
Teams of four players are asked short-answer questions about local history topics, which increase in difficulty as the rounds go higher. The contest features a double-elimination format—two wrong answers are out of play—but they are given the chance to pass on one question. This exciting event culminates in one winning team taking home the traveling trophy.
We look forward to seeing you this Thursday! To learn more about this event, contact Keweenaw National Historical Park at (906) 337-3168 or check the web at www.nps.gov/kewe. The Calumet Theatre is located at 340 Sixth Street in Calumet, Michigan.
