Representative Markkanen Calls For Line 5 Permits To Be Granted

State Representative Greg Markkanen from Hancock, has called for state and federal authorities to stop delaying permits needed to move ahead with Canadian Oil Company Enbridge’s plans to construct a new tunnel and pipeline, which will carry crude oil under the Straits of Mackinac.

He introduced a resolution in support of the project, pointing out the economic opportunities it will provide Upper Peninsula workers.

Michigan’s House approved the resolution.

Markkanen said the new tunnel will protect the Great Lakes from the threat of a spill, while ensuring U.P. families still have access to energy needed to heat their homes every Winter.

He also also pointed out the jobs the project will create.

In recent months, Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy along with the Public Service Commission have delayed permits, requesting more information and public hearings on the matter.

Both the Michigan Court of Claims and Michigan Court of Appeals, have upheld the constitutionality of the original agreement for the project.
