With a new school year underway at Michigan Tech, the City of Houghton has completed many of its preparations.
City manager Eric Waara told the city council Wednesday night that several projects were finished in time for the school year.
That included paving of some streets in areas where many students rent.
Police Chief John Donnelly said not a single arrest was made over the Labor Day weekend, a period that usually sees some illegal activity.
There was a lengthy discussion during a public hearing by the Rental Housing Board over a request for a rental license on Calverley Avenue.
Several residents questioned whether rental licenses are granted too easily.
Councilman Buck Foltz said he felt more time should be taken to look over the requests.
The housing board approved the request by a 3-1 margin, Foltz casting the lone no vote.
In other action, the council:
* Was informed by Donnelly that UPSET will hold its board of directors meeting here today.
* Set Sept. 29 to Oct. 29 as Fall Cleaup.
* Appointed Greg Kingstrom as the Dangerous Building Hearing officer.
* Commended Jim Quinlan for watering downtown plants this summer on a voluntary basis.
