The L’Anse Waterfront will be the starting place for those who will take part in an upcoming charitable event next weekend. Baraga County Communities That Care will be holding its Warrior Walk on Saturday September 8th.
This year’s event comes with a new name and will benefit the local community more so than previous walks.
Baraga County CTC Executive Director Carrie Rich said, “We are having a walk for suicide prevention—both for suicide prevention and awareness in Baraga County. The purpose of the walk in years past, it used to be our “Out of the Darkness” walk and we are stepping away from the Out of the Darkness just for this year. Maybe for the next year or two.”
Out of the Darkness was orchestrated in conjunction with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, but this year’s walk will be assembled locally and will keep all of the proceeds local as well.
Rich said, “We want to try and focus all of the funds that are generated by the walk into Baraga County. There’s a real need right now and we are really trying to focus on programs and things that can help our community, so we’re trying to keep 100% of the funds here.”
Registration for the event is free, however donations are encouraged.
Rich said, “You can sign up at www.runsignup.com\baragacountywarriorwalk, that’s the online registration but the actual date of the walk is on September 8th. Registration starts at 9am at the downtown L’Anse waterfront.”
Prior to the walk, participants will hear from a Marquette County author, who is this year’s guest speaker.
Rich said, “Rebecca Tervo from Ishpeming will be coming over. She will be speaking for the first time in this area about her personal experiences. We’re really excited for her to come so that’s great that she’s coming.”
Rebecca has written two books published within the past few years, including a best seller entitled “Shattered.”
Rich said, “I would encourage as many people that want to join in to the effort in any cause and any way for suicide prevention to please contact us on our Facebook page or our website or www.runsignup.com\baragacountywarriorwalk. That’s how you register before hand but you can always register the day of.”
