Registration Open For Spring Art Classes

Artists in the Keweenaw will soon be learning some new skills as well as touching up on their existing talents.  Registration is now open for spring art classes taking place February-May at the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock.

“The art center has been in downtown Hancock for 26 years and we have a gallery space that represents wonderful local and regional artists, we have a youth exhibition gallery that has Calumet schools, so there’s 80 pieces of art that’s bright and it’s beautiful, and this is a wonderful exhibit while it showcases local and regional artists,” said center director Bonnie Loukus.

Classes are offered on many different art categories including writing, type proofing, and painting workshops, along with clay shadow boxes, watercolor painting, beading and ceramics are offered for 3rd through 6th graders.  High school age students will exploring acrylic painting, black and white photography, and unlocking your creativity, to name a few.  Adult classes are also available and all classes take place at the art center with tuition costs supporting the day to day operations of the facility.

“Since the art center is a nonprofit organization, we have a variety of things that always need support—our programs, our overhead costs, things like that,” said Loukus.

Weeknight classes take place in the evening, and other classes will be held on weekends in the afternoon.  Partial scholarships are available and interested artisans are encouraged to contact the Copper Country Community Art Center for registration by calling 906-482-2333.

Loukus said, “We have a wonderful supportive arts community and I think a lot of businesses and organizations call upon artists to contribute their talents and it’s really fun to see what people come up with, too.”

Spring classes begin on February 9th and run through late May, with discounts available for early registration.
