Employment increased slightly in the Upper Peninsula last month.
The latest report from the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget shows that the number of workers on the job grew to 128,800. That’s 700 better than July, and 3,300 better than August of 2021. The raw unemployment rate for the U.P. – not seasonally adjusted – stands at 4.8 percent. That’s three-tenths of a point lower than a year ago.
Broken down by county, Ontonagon and Baraga’s unemployment rates remain among the highest in the state, with Baraga at 6.9 percent, and Ontonagon at 7.0 percent. Keweenaw County is at 5.3 percent, and Houghton County at 4.5 percent. The statewide unadjusted unemployment rate for August was 4.0 percent.
