Red Cross Closing Calumet Colosseum Supply Center Today

TRAVERSE CITY, MI June 26, 2018 —The American Red Cross of Northern Michigan responded to flooding caused by heavy rains on June 17, 2018.  Trained Red Cross disaster workers responded to the quick-moving flooding throughout Copper Country, providing shelter for people temporarily forced from their homes, food, comfort, and emergency supplies.

“We understand that recovery is not measured in days or even in weeks,’ said Sarah Hemminger, Red Cross Northern Michigan Disaster Program Manager. “Each community and each family will have different needs, and will require different support to meet those needs.Because the Red Cross is part of the community, we will continue to work with government and nonprofit partners to help develop coordinated community recovery plans and strategies.”

As communities move forward into recovery Red Cross services will transition from fixed sites and mobile delivery, to outreach and referral based services. The distribution of emergency supplies from the Calumet Township Colosseum will end at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2018. Supplies will still be available through outreach and referral.

The work of the Red Cross is never finished. Even after a disaster, local volunteers help to educate people about risks and get communities prepared for the next emergency. Our disaster recovery work with community and government partners will help to ensure that Copper Country communities are better prepared for the next emergency.
