At its regular meeting on Thursday, Aug. 4, Michigan Technological University’s Board of Trustees conferred 930 degrees, bring the 2015-16 total to 1,749 degrees—the largest number the school has
ever conferred. The number outpaces the previous record of 1,709 set in 1983-84.
“This demonstrates clearly that Michigan Tech is meeting the challenge of fulfilling the needs of a knowledge-based economy,” said President Glenn Mroz. “Students recognize that a Tech degree
prepares them to succeed, and they are turning to the University in record numbers for that kind of education.”
Terry Woychowski, elected at the last meeting of the Michigan Technological University Board of Trustees, chaired the Board’s first meeting of the new fiscal year. Linda Kennedy is the new vice chair.
The Board appointed Umesh Korde as a professor with tenure in the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics, effective Dec. 27, 2016. Korde joins Michigan Tech from the South
Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where he holds the Pearson Chair in Mechanical Engineering.
They also granted professor emerita status to Suzanne Stephens, who retired from the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
The Board also:
• Set tentative meeting dates for 2017: Feb. 24, April 28, Aug. 3, Oct. 20 and Dec. 15.
• Received a report on gifts to the Michigan Tech Fund, which totaled $40.38 million during fiscal year 2016, nearly $5 million more than in FY 2015.
• Approved language changes in the Board’s policy on discrimination based on sex, to conform with federal guidelines.
• Made committee assignments, including
