It was a lot of rain, but just not a record.
The storm that hit Houghton County during the early morning hours of June 17th dropped around 7.5 of rain in about five hours, according to the Keweenaw Research Center.
During the height of the storm, a meter monitored by the KRC recorded an immense 1.75 inches of rainfall in just one minute.
If true, that would be a world record. Weather.com lists Unionville, Maryland as receiving 1.23 inches of rain in 60 seconds on July 4th, 1956.
Unfortunately, the reading at the KRC appears to have been made in error.
Director Jay Meldrum says the meter does not have the capability to measure rainfall that fast and they suspect that a lightning strike may have caused the sudden spike.
