Rain Slows Yellow Dog Wildfire

Today’s rain has slowed the advance of the wildfire that broke out Wednesday in western Marquette County.

Ottawa National Forest officials report that the fire area has not expanded since last night. It remains localized to the northeast side of the McCormick Wilderness east of Yellow Dog River. A section on private land has not increased and fire crews continue to improve lines in those areas.

The Yellow Dog Trail remains closed until further notice for public and fire fighter safety. Signs are posted at the trailhead and a map is available here.

Crews will continue handline construction on private land east of the wilderness boundary to secure the eastern flank and keep the fire corralled within the wilderness area. In the wilderness area firefighters will continually monitor and walk the perimeter. There are no structures threatened.

Aircraft will be monitoring the fire and assisting crews on the ground as needed.

The fire is described as “creeping and smoldering”, in a remote forested area consisting of both hardwoods and conifers.

Smoke may be visible in very localized areas.
