Michigan Tech is hosting a celebration to mark 11 years that the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative has been working to protect the greatest of the lakes.
The community is invited to the Lake Superior Celebration at the Great Lakes Research Center Thursday from 6-8 pm. The event is free, family-friendly, and open to all.
Director for the Center for Science and Environmental Outreach Joan Chadde says the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative brings local schools together with the community to address stewardship needs. “It’s a sign of student’s initiative, planning, and hard work with the many projects that they have carried out and so each year we like to provide an opportunity where they can share what they have done over the previous year,” said Chadde.
There will be displays and presentations by Barkell Elementary School, Washington Middle School, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City High School, and Copper Country ISD, in addition to informative displays by community organizations, local growers, and non-profits. Jerry Jondreau and Katy Bresette of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will have traditionally harvested & processed maple sugar & manoomin products.
Chadde says everyone should come out and see the wonderful work that these students are doing. “We all benefit from the work that they do and actually creating students that feel attached to where they live and want to invest themselves in making it a better place for everyone,” she said.
LSSI school team presentations will begin at 6:30 pm. Darrell Hendrickson, Washington Middle School science teacher, Matt Zimmer, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City science teacher, and Karyn Juntunen, CCISD Special Education teacher, will describe their stewardship projects.
At 7:00 pm, by Dr. Valoree Gagnon, Director, University-Indigenous Community Partnerships at the Great Lakes Research Center and Research Assistant Professor, Social Sciences, and Rachael Pressley, Assistant Regional Planner, Western UP Planning & Development Region, will present on the Western UP Food Hub.
Students will get in on the fun and learning with a variety of hands-on activities including Tomato Planet, Making Butter, Posy Poetry, and Oh Deer.
The event will also feature LIVE Music with Handful of Humans with Sue Ellen Kingsley, Eric Munch, Norm Kendall and Shawn Oppliger, and the World Water Day art exhibit “Wilderness” featuring artists
Daniel Hill, Josh Jaehnig, Jonathan Soper.
Light refreshments, including snacks, cake, lemonade & coffee will be provided.
The event is sponsored by the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, Michigan Tech Center for Science & Environmental Outreach, and the WUP MiSTEM Network with funding from the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.
