Public Invited To Help Clean Strawberries For Annual Festival

The strawberries are back as the Copper Country Strawberry Festival takes place this month in Chassell.

Judy Evert from the Chassell Lions Club says the local strawberries are quite different than the ones bought from a grocery store.  “When you slice one open, it’s red all the way through and it is so juicy. You don’t need sugar or anything, just to eat them like that,” said Evert.

The festival is held July 12th and 13th, with strawberry shortcake being served beginning at 9:00am that Friday morning.

The event features live music, vendors, rides on Michigan Tech’s Research Vessel Agassiz, and an auction, with the annual awards announced at 7pm Friday, July 12th.

Evert said, “We will introduce, which we have done for a number of years, our Citizen of the Year—that is a top secret until it is announced—along with a Youth Citizen of the Year, and then we have the introduction of our queen candidates and this year we have 12 queen candidates.”

Money raised at the festival goes to support the Chassell Lions Club.

The Copper Country is invited to help the Chassell Lions Club clean strawberries at 5 p.m, Thursday, July 11, at the Chassell Park.  We hope to sell 4500 delicious shortcakes throughout the festival on the 12th and 13th.  Call Barb Worrall, 523-4445 with questions.
