The Hancock City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the city’s proposed solar and wind energy ordinance tonight.
The code would regulate the type, size and placement of solar energy panels and wind turbines, with different rules for residential and industrial areas.
Among the highlights:
• Industrial installations would need to include a decommissioning plan for removing the equipment and restoring the landscaping at the end of the project’s life.
• Residential equipment may not be installed in a front yard.
• Residential wind installations are restricted to bladeless or vertical
axis turbines. No windmill-style generators would be allowed in residential areas, although they could be permitted in industrial areas.
You can get a copy of the proposed ordinance at Hancock City Hall, or download it here.
Tonight’s hearing will begin at 6:00, and will be followed by the DDA’s regular meeting. The agenda includes potential endorsement of the ordinance, which would forward it to the city council for consideration.
